My First Lightning Pic - Downpatrick

My first lightning picture I ever took was this one, I was hanging out a skylight watching and videoing a thunderstorm go by, which is quite rare in this part of the world, maybe 3 or 4 a year and they're usually pretty small and over quickly. But this particular storm lasted for hours and was very cool to watch. It was taken 19th July 2006 just outside Downpatrick, County Down, Northern Ireland.

Landmark Lightning Strikes: Statue Of Liberty, New York

As well as posting various 'random' images and videos I intend to post quite a few images/videos of lightning that feature famous landmarks as part of a series called "Landmark Lightning Strikes."

Below are some absolutely amazing images of lightning strikes hitting the world famous landmark, New York's very own Statue Of Liberty. This first picture was taken by New York photographer Jay Fine who spent the night observing the unfolding lightning storm from Battery Park City, Manhattan.

Lightning Strike Hits Plane

Now for the first video clips for the blog. I found this on youtube and is great footage of a plane flying through a thunderstorm and being hit while the lightning bolt makes it's way to the ground. Of course planes are designed to withstand such strikes, but even still it's pretty amazing to see.

First Lightning Post!

Hello out there and welcome to my new blog "Purple Bolts Of Lightning" (very, very frightening).

I made this blog because I like lightning and I'm sure there is plenty of people out there who do to, so over the next few days, weeks and months I am going to collect the best images/videos/stories from around the world about lightning, lightning storms and their effects on the ground.

So to kick things off here are some spectacular images of lightning being formed by the ash from an erupting volcano in Chile.

Keep checking back as I will be continually updating this blog with more fantastic lightning storm pictures and video clips!
